What’s good
- A genuinely useful free plan. Unlimited sends, landing pages and a recommendation network up to 2,500 subscribers is enough to start properly.
- 0% take rate on paid subscriptions from Lite. For paid newsletters this is the main financial argument. Compared with Substack’s 10%, a $49 monthly fee breaks even at about $490 a month of paid revenue. See beehiiv vs Substack.
- Growth features as part of the product, not add-ons.
- Website, newsletter, podcast and digital products under the same account, per the plan page.
What’s not so good
- The interesting features are paid. Automations, A/B testing, polls and paid subscriptions all start at Lite.
- Price follows list size. The prices shown are for 1,000 subscribers. A list that’s grown through cheap acquisition and never been pruned will cost more than it earns.
- Branding removal is Pro-only.
- Ad monetisation isn’t a given. It’s a Lite-and-above feature, but whether it’s available and worthwhile for your audience and country is something to check before you build a budget around it.
- The free plan is limited by design: one seat and a 30-day analytics lookback.
Who should choose beehiiv
- Newsletter publishers who want growth tooling and monetisation in one place.
- Writers planning paid subscriptions who’d rather pay a flat fee than lose 10%.
- Teams that need multiple seats and publications (Lite has two seats and three publications; Pro has ten and ten).
Who should skip it
- Small businesses that need email marketing for customers rather than publishing: see email marketing for small business.
- People who want the biggest free plan: Kit is free to 10,000 subscribers; see free newsletter platforms.
- Writers who want zero fixed cost until they earn: Substack has no monthly fee.
What an operator should check before paying
- Cost at your size. Open the pricing page, set the slider to your real subscriber count after pruning, and read the monthly price.
- Which plan has your must-haves. Automations and A/B testing start at Lite. Branding removal is Pro.
- Ad monetisation reality. Don’t count on it until you’ve confirmed it applies to your audience.
- Exit. Export your list on day one, and read our migration checklist so you know what’s portable.
For list hygiene, read our guide on pruning and open rates.

About this review
I’ve used beehiiv myself, and it’s the platform I like most of the three I’ve used (beehiiv, Substack and Mailchimp). That’s opinion from using it, not a structured test: the prices and plan details come from beehiiv’s own pages (linked above and on the pricing tracker), not from my account. We don’t publish star ratings. The beehiiv link on this page is an affiliate link, which means we may earn a commission if you sign up; it doesn’t change what we say, and the cons above are the same ones we’d give a friend. Frequently asked questions
Is beehiiv worth it?
I've used it and it's my favourite of the platforms I've tried. It's worth paying for if you want growth tools and monetisation features (paid subscriptions at 0% take rate, ad monetisation, referrals) in one platform and you'll use them. If you only need to send a plain newsletter, the free plan (up to 2,500 subscribers) or a cheaper tool may be enough.
How much does beehiiv cost?
On its pricing page on 23 Oct 2026: Free ($0, up to 2,500 subscribers), Lite ($49/mo billed yearly at 1,000 subscribers) and Pro ($95/mo billed yearly at 1,000 subscribers), plus a custom Enterprise plan. Price depends on subscriber count.
Does beehiiv take a percentage of paid subscriptions?
The pricing page lists a 0% take rate on Lite and above. The payment provider's card fees still apply.
Is beehiiv good for beginners?
The free plan is a low-risk way to start, and onboarding is listed as self-serve on all but Enterprise. I've used beehiiv and it's the platform I like most, but I haven't run a structured ease-of-use test against others, so try the free plan before paying.
What are the downsides of beehiiv?
Automations, A/B testing and paid subscriptions need a paid plan, price rises with list size, branding removal is Pro-only, and the free plan has a 30-day analytics lookback and one team seat.
